The governing Islamist party in Tunisia said it will relinquish power after negotiations with opposition parties that get under way next week, the Associated Press reports.
The deal to replace the Islamist party government calls for three weeks of discussions to appoint a temporary, nonpartisan government. The news comes amid more than two years of conflict in the country, the birthplace of the Arab Spring uprisings, and after a key opposition figure was assassinated in July.
Tunisian protesters moved to overthrow their authoritarian government in January of 2011. Those protests helped lead to similar uprisings in Syria, Egypt and Libya.
