In the wake of continued turmoil in Egypt, the United States will likely withhold most military aid to Egypt.

According to reports in CNN and Reuters, Obama administration officials told both news agencies that President Obama has not made a final decision, but the White House is leaning towards cutting most of the $1 billion annual assistance, except for funds that go to counter-terrorism and security in the Sinai Peninsula, which borders Israel.

After the military-backed ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July, the Obama administration said it would suspend about half of the military assistance. Violent unrest has continued; 57 were killed and more than 400 injured in the most recent clashes in Cairo last weekend.
