Privately run establishments had been skirting law by serving snacks and refreshments

Cuba ordered the closure of a number of privately run video game salons and movie theaters Saturday, according to a statement in the Communist Party newspaper Granma.

Private theaters and video game salons, offering limited snacks and refreshments, had been able to evade the law by acting like independent restaurants until Saturday’s decree that said all unauthorized businesses and proprietors must end operations immediately.

Cuba has seen limited economic reforms under President Raul Castro, but the government is tightening its grip on private enterprise, banning not only popular entertainment businesses but also the sale of imported goods.
