Long-proposed peace talks on Syria’s civil war will reportedly begin on Dec. 12, according to AFP.

Citing the Syrian newspaper Al-Watan, which credited diplomats in Paris, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius that the date would be announced on Nov. 25 by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Al-Watan noted that both officials within the Syrian government and opposition would not confirm the report.

Earlier this week, the Syrian National Coalition, the main Western-backed opposition group that rebels say is untethered from the situation on the ground, voted to attend the talks. On Wednesday, one of its members, Louay Safi, wrote an op-ed for the Guardian explaining that decision.
