Al Qaeda-linked rebels in Syria have apologized for beheading a fellow Islamist rebel on video in what appears to have been a case of mistaken identity.

Beheading videos (some faked) stream out of Syria every day from both the rebel and government sides. But when a recent video was released featuring two fighters from the hardline faction Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) holding up a decapitated, bearded head in front of a crowed in Aleppo, it quickly became clear that things had not gone as intended. Members of an allied Islamist rebel faction, Ahrar al-Sham recognized the head as that of one of their commanders, Mohammed Fares, who had gone missing days before.

An ISIS spokesman indicated to The Telegraph that Allah would forgive a man for accidentally beheading a non-infidel.
