At Least Five Dead in Japan Factory Blast

Plant run by Mitusbishi Materials makes products for the automobile, electronics and construction industries

A blast at a Japanese chemicals factory killed at least five people and injured a dozen more on Thursday, reports AFP.

The explosion at a plant in Yokkaichi, central Japan, occurred at around 2 p.m. local time while maintenance crews were working on a heat exchanger used in the production of silicon products.

The factory is owned by Mitusbishi Materials, making various products for the automobile, electronics and construction industries. According to local police, “five people are dead, 12 people have been injured, of whom nine sustained only minor injuries.”
