The United States has pledged $380 million in relief aid to Syrian civilians beleaguered by the the civil war raging across the country, bringing the total humanitarian aid committed by the U.S. since the crisis began to $1.7 billion.
Secretary of State John Kerry made the commitment at a donors’ conference Wednesday in Kuwait, as United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon’s announced that $6.5 billion was needed to provide food, water, medical care and shelter for the estimated 6.5 million civilians that have been displaced within Syria, the New York Times reports.
Kuwait pledged $500 million at the conference, while Saudi Arabia and Qatar each pledged $60 million.
