Boat Accident Near Popular Indian Tourist Destination Kills 21

Operators sailed with nearly double maximum passenger capacity, reports say

An overcrowded boat capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Port Blair, in the scenic Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday afternoon, killing around 21 Indian tourists from Tamil Nadu and Mumbai. Another 23 people were rescued, the Press Trust of India reports.

The boat had reportedly crammed 45 passengers on board when its capacity was only around 25.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered his condolences in a statement. The government has also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
