Not a year after delivering a tearful warning at a climate summit in Doha, Qatar, the Philippines’ lead negotiator, Naderev Saño, delivered a second heartfelt plea at the opening session of the annual U.N. summit on climate change in Warsaw. As his country grappled with the aftermath of Supertyphoon Haiyan, he vowed to fast in solidarity with his countrymen and his brother, who survived the storm but is now without food. “What my country is going through as a result of this extreme climate event is madness. The climate crisis is madness,” he said.
