Ahead of the 60th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities of the Korean War on July 27, 1953, the isolated government of North Korean despot Kim Jong Un staged its annual Mass Games in Pyongyang. The event, now a regular draw for foreign photographers, journalists and a handful of tourists, is a Stalinist propaganda fever dream enacted by hundreds of North Korean volunteers.

@hydroxandhorlix Wow! Every1, a pixel in the Matrix...
Other than the placards held up to depict a child in military uniform, this type of performance looks like the type of thing done at South Korean schools and festivals on a regular basis (just on a grander, collective scale. I'd say most of it looks like something that is a Korean dream. Other than the one photo already discussed, the type of photos shown here would be odd in the USA but fit well within the cultural norms of the Korean Peninsula - North and South.
@TIME The scum of the Earth that are neo-colonialist régimes.
@wilkinebrutus I don't think South Koreans are allowed to attend, no. But Americans can sign up for tours, I think.
@AnetteIren Unfortunately, what you see there contains a lot of suffering. It's 100% forced labour. My generation made the same in the 80s.
@emilyrauhala Right, Koreans arent even allowed to attend DMZ tours. I've gone...quite interesting. Mass Games end Sept.9.
@emilyrauhala And yep, Americans can travel through Koryo Tours.
@AnetteIren We were obligated to do this in August, repeating the program on 37C heat on a 80.000 places stadium. Many children collapsed.
