Switzerland, a country with a long tradition of direct democracy, will hold a referendum on five provisions on March 12. A sampling of what is on the ballot: whether or not to mandate six weeks of vacation, a new book-price agreement and a proposal to ensure that state earnings from gambling are used for the public interest. An absolute majority of the country’s more than 5 million registered voters must pick “yes” for each provision to become law.
