Two earthquakes hit the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in southwestern China on Sept. 7,killing at least 89 people and injuring some 820 others. More than 200,000 are believed to have been displaced following the magnitude 5.6 quakes. The tremors — an hour apart — mostly struck mountainous areas, triggering landslides that blocked some roads. Local officials say the death toll might rise because seriously damaged telecommunications and traffic infrastructure have made it difficult to collect information.
