Deng’s moment of fame as Murdoch’s “tiger wife” came in 2011 during a session of the Leveson Inquiry into allegations of phone hacking in Britain by Murdoch’s News of the World. Two hours into the grueling hearing, a protester made for Murdoch with a shaving-cream pie on a paper plate. In a quick, reflexive move, Deng—who was seated behind Murdoch—lunged across to protect her husband from the man and punched him in the face. “Mr. Murdoch, your wife has a very good left hook,” said Tom Watson, a Labour Member of Parliament and a member of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee that interrogated Murdoch and his son James.
