Fan Yue, the deputy director at the State Archives Administration, was removed from his post in June after his 26-year-old mistress, TV anchor Ji Yingnan, posted photos and videos on Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social messaging service. This was retribution for learning that Fan was not single as she was led to believe, but actually had a wife and teenage son. Over four years, Fan gave $1.63 million in cash and gifts to Ji, who posted a video of her ex-lover proposing to her in front of friends at a party with a big bouquet of flowers. Ji lamented to the Washington Post: “I never imagined that the one I loved so much, the one I gave so much love to, the one who lived four years with me, would become my enemy one day.” The State Archives Administration is now investigating the source of the money that Fan is alleged to have spent.
