As MNLF-leader Nur Misuari failed to gain support for a second bid as governor of Mindanao, he launched attacks in Zamboanga and Jolo island in 2001. Eventually, Misuari fled to Malaysia, but was apprehended and deported. He remained in Philippine detention until 2008, when he was released. By that time, MNLF had broke into further factions, and a group called Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters had broken away from MILF.
