An Indian girl reportedly died in a hospital on Wednesday after being raped by three men the night before, then set on fire, according to several news reports.
The girl, aged 13 or 14 and from a village in the northern state Uttar Pradesh, had sustained burns covering 80% of her body, the Times of India reports.
The girl’s family told police she was returning from a farm with her older sister when three villagers dragged her away and raped her. When she said she would tell others in the village, her attackers set her on fire. By the time the girl’s sister had returned with help, the girl was severely burned.
Police are now searching for the suspects.
This is the just latest rape case to make news out of India and draw attention to women’s safety since last December, when a 23-year-old student was brutally gang-raped in New Delhi, then thrown from a moving bus. She died two weeks later in a Singapore hospital; five of those six assailants were convicted, and one died in custody. Last month, four were sentenced to death.
