After a two-day election, 98.1% of Egyptian voters approved a constitution in the first vote under the regime that toppled Mohamed Morsi in a July coup.
While the results suggest a ringing endorsement of the military-backed regime that ousted Morsi and suppressed the Muslim Brotherhood, only 38.6 percent of the country’s 53 million eligible voters went to the polls, the Associated Press reports. Morsi supporters also boycotted the vote.
There were clashes Friday after Morsi-supported protests turned violent, and activists expressed concerns about arrests and detentions ahead of the vote.
