Libya’s interior minister escaped an assassination attempt in Tripoli on Wednesday, state media reported.

While traveling to a meeting of the interim parliament, the car that Al-Sadik Abdel-Karim was riding was attacked and damaged by gunmen. AFP reports the incident involving “a barrage of bullets” was confirmed by the prime minister’s office.

No additional details were provided. Government officials, security personnel and the media are regular targets of bombings and assassinations in Libya. A lack of a strong military and police has pushed the government to rely on security from unstable militias often comprised of rebels who opposed the rule of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi before his overthrow and death in 2011.
