An estimated 32.4 million people around the world were forced from their homes by disasters last year — 98% of them weather-related — according to data just released by the Norwegian Refugee Council. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, one of the leading bodies that researches global uprooting, reports that is nearly double the number from 2011, and that 68% (22.2 million) are in Asia. And with a tropical cyclone headed toward Myanmar, where tens of thousands of people fled ethnic violence in the last year for camps near the Andaman Sea, refugee officials are warning of an impending humanitarian catastrophe.
