In late summer, China was hit by a series of storms that forced 3.5 million people to leave their homes. The largest, Typhoon Haikui, made landfall on Aug. 8 and led to the displacement of more than two million people along the northern and southern coasts. In Shanghai alone, 370,000 people living in temporary housing near ports were evacuated.
